The “Swampers” were four studio recording musicians who played on hundreds of hit records and also founded Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Sheffield in 1969. The studio became an instant success, drawing major recording artists from around the world including The Rolling Stones, Bob Segar, Cher, Rod Stewart, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, The Staples Singers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cat Stevens, Jimmy Buffett and many more.

Today, the world-famous studio is owned and operated by the nonprofit Muscle Shoals Music Foundation whose mission is to honor the rich music heritage by sharing the story through education, studio tours and special events. The Foundation is a 501C3 organization and donations are tax deductible.

The studio was closed on March 15, 2020, due to COVID-19. The studio reopened on June 2, 2020, with strict policies regarding social distancing and CDC compliance.

Since mid-March, the foundation has suffered substantial financial hardships related to losses in ticket and merch sales and projected revenue from our annual fundraiser (which had been scheduled for April 25). That number is escalating daily due to adjusting tour group sizes downward to safely comply with the “new normal.”
The Muscle Shoals Music Foundation is grateful for the ongoing support of the Alabama Humanities Foundation (AHF)  during the COVID-19 crisis. Thanks to a grant from AHF Muscle Shoals Sound Studio was able to reopen June 2 for public tours.
